Algol has sponsored the purchase of an Atlantic 85 lifeboat for the Finnish Lifeboat Institution

News 3.2.2025
The Finnish Lifeboat Institution has acquired a used Atlantic 85 lifeboat hull in good condition
from England with the support of Algol Oy. During 2025, the possibilities of utilising this boat
model as a cabin lifeboat will be explored.

Atlantic 85 -hanketta sponsoroi Meripelastusseuran pitkäaikainen tukija Algol Oy.

The highly seaworthy, carbon-fibre Atlantic 85 lifeboat purchased from the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is suitable for a wide range of uses and demanding conditions. The aim of the new project is to explore whether a lightweight cabin could be built on top of the hull, which was originally designed as an open boat, in order to provide better weather protection for the crew. The concept design of the project is being carried out in collaboration with a boat design studio.

“There is a lot of demand for a reasonably priced boat of this size equipped with a cabin at our inland water rescue stations, so we decided to investigate whether we could utilise Atlantic 85 hulls, which were built for marine rescue, in a lifeboat concept. The Atlantic 85 could indeed offer a cost-effective solution,” says Taneli Mauno, Technical Manager at the Finnish Lifeboat Institution.

The Atlantic 85 project is sponsored by Algol Oy, a long-time supporter of the Finnish Lifeboat Institution.

“Together we can promote safety and responsibility – both at sea and in business. The Finnish Lifeboat Institution and its volunteer marine rescuers perform important work in helping those in distress at sea along the coast and in our inland waters. By sponsoring the Atlantic 85 project, Algol is concretely supporting the activities of the Finnish Lifeboat  Institution,” says Alexander Bargum, CEO of Algol.

The Finnish Lifeboat Institution has purchased used Atlantic 21 and 75 hulls from the RNLI since the early 2000s. The Finnish Lifeboat Institution currently has a total of 24 operational and seaworthy Atlantic 75 lifeboats, of which 19 are in operational use and the last 5 are awaiting equipment and placement. The lifeboats are being equipped to be suitable for use by volunteer sea rescuers in Finnish conditions.

“Atlantic lifeboats are the result of a long product development process and are built to the highest standards. Re-equipping second-hand boats is a cost-effective and sustainable way to ensure that volunteer marine rescuers have safe and appropriate tools at their disposal,” says Taneli Mauno.
